What is "Senate Bill 40"?

Senate Bill 40 (SB40) in Missouri, passed in 1969, established the legal framework for the creation of county-level boards known as Senate Bill 40 Boards (SB40 Boards). These boards are dedicated to providing services and support to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Funded by local property taxes, SB40 Boards are tasked with assessing community needs, allocating resources, and ensuring that services such as residential care, vocational training, employment opportunities, and transportation are available to individuals with developmental disabilities. The bill was a significant step in enhancing the quality of life and promoting the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in Missouri.

About Us

Senate Bill 40 is a Missouri law that allows local governments to collect a small sales tax specifically to support people with developmental disabilities. This funding helps organizations like the Independence Center of Ste. Genevieve provide vital services to individuals in the community.

The Independence Center of Ste. Genevieve is a nonprofit that offers a range of programs and services to enhance the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities in Ste. Genevieve County. Through the support of Senate Bill 40 funding, the center provides personal assistance, job training, life skills support, and community integration to help individuals live more independently. This funding is essential in ensuring that the center can continue to serve and empower those in need.
